“Fellow Travelers”

“Though there are many phrases for the therapeutic relationship (patient/therapist, client/counselor, and the latest — and, by far, the most repulsive — user/provider), none of these phrases accurately convey my sense of the therapeutic relationship. Instead I prefer to think of my patients and myself as fellow travelers, a term that abolishes distinctions between “them” (the afflicted) and “us” (the healers).”

- Irvin Yalom

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. Everyone is going through something — big or small, short-term or long-term — and we are all in this together. We are all fellow travelers. My goal is to accompany you on this journey and do whatever I can to ease these burdens we are all exposed to.

How it works:

1. CONNECT WITH YOUR THERAPIST:

Get in touch with your therapist to begin the intake process, or to simply ask questions regarding services.

This can be done in a few different ways:

2. PAPERWORK:

We will need to get some basic contact information such as client name, date-of-birth, and email to connect with you via our online client portal.

You will be asked to complete and e-sign the documents provided in the new client paperwork within the portal.

If you are having trouble or do not wish to complete the paperwork electronically, please let us know. A pdf can be sent via e-mail to print and complete prior to the intake session, or one can be provided in the waiting room prior to the session. If you choose this option, please ensure enough time to complete the packet (at least 15 minutes). Completed paperwork (electronically or otherwise) is required prior to intake session.

3. FIRST (INTAKE) SESSION(S):

This session will be unlike the “regular” sessions.

This session is necessary to ensure informed consent, making sure you know what to expect and understood the paperwork, including company policies and conditions of treatment.

This is also the “get to know you” session. We will go over background information relevant to your treatment and ensure we are a “good fit” as “fellow travelers” in the treatment process.

After this session, I will complete a treatment plan based on the information gathered, which is essentially a road-map for goals and objectives for your therapy journey.

4. THERAPY (ANY ADDITIONAL) SESSIONS:

These are more what you might expect therapy to be. This is where we will explore the presenting issue(s) and whatever else might come up throughout the process.

It won’t always be easy or comfortable, but it will be well worth it and you deserve every bit of better.

“We cannot change, we cannot move away from what we are, until we thoroughly accept what we are. Then change seems to come about almost unnoticed.”

- Carl Rogers

I hope this provides a glimpse into the process. It can be daunting, but we can handle it together! Feel free to ask any further questions.
